Electric Bike FAQs
What is an electric bike, and how does pedal assist work?
An electric bike is a bicycle with a rechargeable battery and motor that supports the rider. In pedal-assist mode, sensors detect pedalling and add assistance according to the selected level; the rider still steers, brakes, changes gears and pedals. Most e-bikes can also be ridden with assistance switched off, although the extra weight may make them feel harder to pedal than a conventional bike.
Which type of electric bike is best for me?
Choose according to the ride you do most often. City and commuter e-bikes suit regular sealed-road trips; cargo e-bikes suit heavier loads; fat tyre e-bikes favour stability on mixed surfaces; hybrid bikes bridge roads and light gravel; electric mountain bikes suit trails; folding bikes prioritise storage; and step-through frames make mounting easier. Choose for your normal use rather than the most extreme ride you might do occasionally.
What should I look for when buying an electric bike?
Start with fit, riding position and intended terrain. Then compare real journey distance, hills, rider and cargo weight, bike weight, battery capacity, brake type, frame access, included accessories, storage, charging access, warranty and local service support. A larger motor or maximum-range claim cannot compensate for poor fit, unsuitable geometry or a bike that is too heavy to store safely.
What is the difference between a mid-drive and a hub-drive e-bike?
A mid-drive motor sits near the crank and sends assistance through the bicycle’s gears, which can feel balanced and work well on hills or with cargo. A hub motor drives one wheel directly and is often mechanically simpler. Mid-drives reward correct shifting and can increase chain and cassette wear, while hub-drive suitability depends heavily on motor tuning, wheel position and the terrain being ridden.
How do I choose the right e-bike size and frame style?
Rider height is only a starting point. Check standover height, inseam clearance, reach, saddle adjustment and whether you can mount, stop and restart confidently. A step-through or mid-step frame can help with frequent stops or limited mobility, while a step-over frame may appeal to riders who prefer a traditional frame shape. The best frame is the one that fits both your body and your normal riding conditions.
Are Baicycle electric bikes legal to ride in Australia?
Baicycle e-bikes that are certified to EN 15194 and supplied in their Australian-compliant configuration meet the core technical requirements for pedal-assist e-bikes in Australia. Certification status may vary by model, so please refer to the individual product page for model-specific compliance information. As riding rules and permitted areas can vary by state, territory and location, please check the local requirements before riding.
What maintenance and battery care does an e-bike need?
Routine care includes tyre-pressure checks, brake inspection, chain cleaning and lubrication, spoke and fastener checks, and scheduled servicing. Use only the approved charger, charge in a dry and ventilated area, and do not charge a battery that is damaged, swollen, unusually hot or wet. Electrical faults, firmware and battery repairs should be handled through qualified support rather than treated as ordinary bicycle maintenance.
